About Theta Alpha Chapter
Pi Kappa Phi began in 1904 at the College of Charleston when seven men formed an alliance to run for office in that year’s campus elections. The fraternity grew rapidly and is now in the nation’s top five fraternities in numbers of chapters. Founder’s Day is celebrated December 10th of every year.
The Theta Alpha chapter at The University of Southern Mississippi was colonized in October in 1997 and chartered April 24th 1999. After its chartering, Pi Kappa Phi stunned the campus with a 25-man inaugural rush class that fall. Theta Alpha truly became the new paradigm for fraternities at Southern Miss.
In 2001, the 5-Star Program was introduced to rank fraternities at Southern Miss based on criteria such as academics, intramurals, campus involvement, community service, public relations, and sorority relations. Pi Kappa Phi won the 5-Star Award that year, which is something it would soon grow accustomed to doing. The fraternity won the award for the next three years until the program was replaced with the ECEP program.
Pi Kappa Phi has grown into the fraternity of influence. Besides the numerous SGA positions filled by the fraternity every year, members of the fraternity have left their impact on the campus in other ways. Fall break, Eaglepalooza, and the Varsity concept all originated from members of Pi Kappa Phi.
Pi Kappa Phi’s membership has grown to include an impressive membership, with a steadfast focus not on quantity, but finding, recruiting, and bettering quality men with potential to lead their chapter and their campus.
